Merchant Alliance Trade Route

Flying with the Merchant’s Alliance is one of the fastest and easiest ways to make gold in Sea of Thieves, and the new Trade Routes are an even faster but higher risk way of doing it. Now the Merchant Alliance won’t send you on the most action packed of quests, but rather quests that involve deliveries, map knowledge and the best places to max out your profits. Just make sure you bring a small fortune before you get started. All in all, the Merchant’s alliance is definitely the most chill to adventure on.

Flying under the Merchant's Emissary

Merchant Alliance Trade Route

In order to start these new Trade Routes the first thing you need to do before ANYTHING else is to fly under the Merchant’s Emissary flag. So either you or a friend need to fly the flag. If you don’t have your own, or (if you are going solo as a beginner) you’ll need to grind up to level 5 in this faction to purchase the Merchant’s Emissary Flag from ANY Merchant for 20,000 gold. To see our Merchant Alliance Guide for more information CLICK HERE.

With the new Trade Routes, the Merchant Alliance has become a “High Risk, Higher Reward” position, and you’ll make some real gold without having to fight your way to it.

Merchant Alliance Trade Route

Once you have the flag flying, the next step is to speak with the local Merchant Alliance Representative to get some commodities together. Just make sure once you’ve purchased these Commodities from the merchant that you claim them by interacting with the Merchant member you purchased them from.

Supply and Demand

Now each outpost has two important things to remember, Sought-after and Surplus. Sought-after means this outpost will pay practically double the normal selling price for a specific crate of goods. Surplus means they have a total of 3 crates you can buy from them, and if you try to sell them a crate they have surplus of you will get next to nothing for it and LOSE PROFIT! These routes change WEEKLY, so be sure to check the book next to any Merchant Alliance Representative to see each islands list.

Knowing where to get more supplies and who’s going to pay top dollar is the KEY to making it big on these trade routes. As you can see if the chart below there is a huge jump in some of the normal sell prices vs the Sought-after sell prices. Now the prices do vary due to the unique algorithm that Sea of Thieves uses so I listed what prices I saw the most.

So now that we know what and where to sell, its time to break it down for the most efficient way to max your profit. Depending on which island you start at, I have listed the most optimal route to take to save time and make your coin purse a bit too heavy. There are two main routes to take, either the quick route, where you only make 8 stops and bank around 41,000 G (not including Emissary Bonus), or the Full Route, where you go to every Outpost twice to sell only the Sought-after items banking only about 51,500 G (not including Emissary Bonus). This makes the Quick Routes more efficient and what we will aim for.

Emissary Levels

Sea of Thieves

Just like every other alliance, the Merchant’s Alliance flag can be upgraded to level 5, which will give the best bonuses to selling your items as possible. For your knowledge (and greed):

  • Emissary Level 1: No Bonus
  • Emissary Level 2: 33% Bonus
  • Emissary Level 3: 66% Bonus
  • Emissary Level 4: 100% Bonus
  • Emissary Level 5: 150% Bonus

That’s right, when you have Emissary Level 5 you receive more than DOUBLE what the item is worth, so typically, unless you’re having a rough time with other players or the risk is getting too high, you wanna get to level 5.

Lowering Emissary Flag

Sea of Thieves Merchant

Once you’ve finished your trade route its time to decide what you do next, either lower the flag to receive a cool 5,000 gold right there on the spot, not to mention a good chunk of reputation, or you can grab the emissary quest from any merchant, which gives you just a bunch of quests for free.

Either way, make sure that when you ARE done with your voyage with the Merchant’s Alliance, that you do lower the flag. Too many times have I had crewmates leave before the flag goes down, and there’s a lot to be gained in lowering the flag.
